Armidale Dumaresq and the surrounding district is
renowned for producing some of the best fine wool in
Australia. Each year the New England Wool Expo and
The Australian Wool Fashion Awards (TAWFA) are held
in Armidale to promote the local industry.
Fat lamb and cattle enterprises are just as prominent.
The strength of these local primary industries has led
to many research programs and partnerships between
local farmers and the University of New England, CSIRO
Chiswick, Private Research Organisations and the local
Department of Primary Industries.
In more recent times cool climate wine growing has
expanded in the region. Armidale is the major population
centre for the newly declared New England Australia
Geographic Indicator. This means the area has been
recognised as a distinct national wine growing region.
Several wineries and cellar doors including Petersons,
Merilba Estate, Thunder Ridge, Whyworry Wines,
Glenhoya Wines, Boorolong Road Estate and others
are attracting strong interest from wine enthusiasts
and visitors to the region. Diverse enterprises in
aquaculture, pome fruits, berries, olives and alpachas
are also a feature of the area.
